Employment Opportunities

The South Portland School Department's Transportation Department conducts School Bus Driver training sessions within the Department. Successful graduates are prepared for testing by the State of Maine Department of Motor Vehicles. The starting rate of pay for full time school bus driver is $13.47. The rate of pay for an on-call driver is $13.47. Applicants must have clean driving records for the last 3 years and have a clean criminal record. Extensive background checks are required along with fingerprinting, pre-employment drug/alcohol testing and State of Maine School Bus physical exams are also required to be hired. Any criminal record or history of child or drug abuse is disqualifying for employment as a school bus driver.

 

Once a convening date is established, all applicants will be scheduled for an informational orientation at the Transportation Office at 1142 Highland Avenue, South Portland, Maine 04106. Approximately three-five weeks of training will be conducted. Classroom training and behind the wheel training will be conducted mainly during the normal workday. There maybe weekend training scheduled depending on the Driver Trainer and the potential school bus driver applicants' schedule. Employment as an on-call driver would follow license certification requirements till there is a full time position opening that the new licensed driver may apply for.

Permanent School Bus Drivers typically work an 8 hour day. There is a rotating list where permanent drivers are considered for any sport/field trips. Permanent drivers qualify for many benefits including medical. Many drivers appreciate the school work calendar which matches that of their school aged children.

Others appreciate the opportunity to attend college classes mid-day and in the evenings while they work part time. Many of our drivers have been driving for us over 10 years. If you enjoy working with children this is a great job for you.

The South Portland School Department services 8 schools and is located 4 miles South of Portland Maine.

The Transportation Department travels approximately 205,000 miles a year while transporting 1,700 students daily. We have 13 regular routes and 3 activity runs. On an average we travel 40,000 miles for school related trips and activities.

We are not only responsible for the Safe transportation of students to and from school and co-curricular events bus also the maintenance of vehicles and equipment within the district.

We have 21 school bus units, 7 maintenance vehicles and miscellaneous agricultural and snow removal equipment.

As you can see in order to ensure the safe transportation of students while having the most efficient and team oriented department, it takes the implementation of technology and the continued support of dedicated personnel.
