Instructional Support Transportation
Special needs students are assigned transportation on an as needed basis. All students not otherwise capable of utilizing regular transportation services, and whose IEP (Individual Education Plan) indicates a need for special bussing, will be provided with transportation resources tailored to the individual needs of the student.
Special needs transportation is generally a door-to-door service utilizing specialized vehicles. These vehicles are generally smaller than the conventional school bus and contain such equipment as wheel chair lifts, additional restraint systems, and lower step heights. All special needs school buses are ADA compliant. Special needs routes also have driver assistants on board to help with the myriad of individual needs and possible emergency situations that may arise.
For more information concerning special needs transportation you can contact the learning strategist at your child’s school or the Transportation Services at 767-7714.
NOTE: The Transportation Department continually develops and implements standard operating procedures to ensure the safety and accountability of children. To support that philosophy your bus driver has been instructed not to discharge your special needs child without physically seeing an authorized adult at the discharge location to accept that child.
If no one will be at home to meet the bus, please call Transportation at 767-7714 before 1:00 p.m. to let us know who will be taking your child off the bus. At the present time, you as the parent/s are the only people to whom we are authorized to release the child. If someone else will be meeting the bus on a regular basis, we will need written authorization from you. If you or an authorized adult are not at the discharge location to accept your child we will try to contact you with the telephone numbers provided to us. If we cannot contact you we will continue with the route and the School will be contacted and you will be asked to meet the bus at the school. At that time, your child will be turned over to the School Administration or school personnel.
